A 23-year-old Indian youth was found dead in an apartment in Truro, Canada’s Nova Scotia province. According to media reports, members of the community suspect that it is a racially motivated hate crime. David McNeil of Truro Police Service said he arrived at the apartment after a call late Saturday at 2 p.m. where he found a man with deep wounds to his body, CBC Canada reported.
McNeil confirmed that the youth’s name was Prabhjot Singh Khatri who later died of these life-threatening injuries. It was told in the news that the police is treating this case of death as a case of murder. One person was arrested in connection with the murder but was later released. He said, “We acted on several search warrants over the weekend and we even arrested a suspect shortly after the incident. However, at this point of time, he has been released from custody without charges related to murder. But that person is still under our suspicion.”
McNeil said he met with the victim’s family, friends and members of the local Indo-Canadian community on Sunday night and offered his condolences.
Singh had come to Canada from India in 2017 for studies. CTV News reported that a fund has been created as part of efforts to send Singh’s body to India. The report said that Singh’s friends suspect that it may be a crime motivated by racial hatred. The members of the community are furious over the incident and have described themselves as unsafe.
